Not unlike Yahoo’s Timecapsule, BBC points to a British initiative to use a mass blog to record ‘everyday life’ on October 17th. We used to only come together to commemorate the past or yell at the present, now we can supplement that in mass attempts to pre-figure how we will be seen in the future. “Dear future Internet…”

There seems to be surfacing one question in the past months: What will be recorded out of the massive internet information overload for the future? Is history still written by “winners of wars”? Will people in the future only get a glimps of life in the past filtered through the technology of the internet?
So many questions!
It reminds me of my babybook my aunt made for me. She collected all the news from the day I was born and included ads for HEMA and V&D. It also included (well, it’s actually lost) the number 1 hit single from that week. The book, together with her thoughts on life, politics, love and everything give a nice overview of my birthday. This initiative feels the same. The Zeitgeist of October 17, 2006 collected for the people by the people?
Wow, I wish I had a book like that, but with the internet I can come pretty close to know what happened on my birthday. Although I think I don’t want to know what was no. 1 in the charts…
(couldn’t resist, it were the Star Sisters, you know… with Patricia Paay, what a disappointment… :) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M-DIj84AUio )
