  • About the user: I was born in Piacenza, a little city in the North of Italy. I grew up with five brothers and sisters and various adopted and hosted children who temporary lived with my family. In 2005 I moved on my own to Pisa to study Film, Music and Theater and later (2006) I moved to Haarlem to study Information Science in Amsterdam. I graduated in August 2009 and then started the post-graduated program New Media, at the same university (UvA). Simultaneously I'm studying fine arts at the Rietveld Academy and running a stage at Technische Unie in the Product information & eBusiness department.

New Media Shaping of Perception and the New Space of the Body

Sandbox Berlin (2007) Aram Bartholl

The past few months I have been working on my master thesis. The aim of this thesis was to research human perception of space and of time, as well as of the body, and how digital new media have an influence on it. I believe that digital new media are…

The Sound of Shadow: Inverted Shadow by Eelco Wagenaar

The Sound of Shadow is an exhibition of works by a mix of graduating and graduated artists, some coming from the Gerrit Rietveld Academy, that takes place in Amsterdam (Westergasfabriek) in the month of May 2010. The works aim to reflect on the relation between sound and (moving) image, and they do so by using image instead of sound. The

Space/Time Perception Through Digital Media: The Cubinator Project

Screen shot 2010-03-27 at 9.00.55 PMVirtualization of our daily tasks, as well as of communication processes, social activity, production, economics, media consumption, etc. probably have more impact on our temporal and special awareness and sensorial processes than we normally realize. Sarah and I came to this conclusion during the research that we decided to undertake for the seminar Scopic Regimes of Vituality.  Our…

New Media Protocols and the Artist (Rasing his Voice?)

http://beallcenter.uci.edu/calendar/images/campbell-image.jpg

In my research paper – which I will be writing the next two months, I want to deepen the discussion around new media art and its relation to political and social engagement. While net.art has always taken a very strong stand against the mainstream culture and has promoted a so called “counter-culture” by coordinating hacktivists…

Second Life meets FaceBook: Why do we like being part of a virtual community?

http://socialnetworkbar.files.wordpress.com/2009/03/facebook-on-second-life_001.png?w=460&h=255

Even though Levy’s writing style is not my favorite (and that is probably because I am getting used to the Dutch style, very to-the-point), I still can handle it (probably because, in the end, I’m Italian and his mother tongue is French). In his book Becoming Virtual: Reality in the Digital Age, Levy writes…

Twitter Poetry and the Re-use Era: the Creation of Meaning

Twitter writing poetryAs I wrote in the last post about my new media research on Twitter, this new social networking site offers a very specific new format for communication. It gives a constraint of 140 characters to write a status update. Although Twitter asks the user to write “what he is doing”, this space is used by different users in…

Twitter Poetry and Mobility in Art

http://theothermother.typepad.com/.a/6a00d83451c28c69e2010534e39def970c-320piTwitter is the ultimate social networking site. The last trend for new media junks. Journalists, politicians, writers, artists, depressed teenagers, hyper-active middle-aged Internet addicted, new Iphone owners, everyone seems to be out there, on Twitter. Of course, because Facebook is so 2006.

What Twitter seems to scream is: back-to-basic. Twitter has basically only one function: you can only write a…

How much do I know about you?

http://nl.toonpool.com/user/562/files/eyes_564945.jpgThis is the sequel of an experiment I started last week. I was curious how can you use Facebook quizzes for research and marketing purposes. My self made Facebook Quiz has not become very successful. After about a week only 17 people took the Quiz. I guess that my promotion techniques can be improved. A lot. Although, I…

Are you a nerd, a geek, a dork or a dweeb?

http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_uYLeGaENxug/SGUOu2h17TI/AAAAAAAAAMk/HLOZKBZiY2Y/s400/facebook-addiction.jpgIn a new media class at the university everyone always has some kind of addiction. There are students who are addicted to games, some who are addicted to blogs, others to dating sites or stream-videos and chats. Eventually, they become experts and professors teaching about their own addiction. Well, I am one of them. And I am addicted to social…

Wikipedia, we want the truth?

books vs internetI am a student of the new millennium. That means that I rarely go to a library building, I hardly use books made out of paper and the reference lists on the bottom of my school papers  look very much blue, full of hyper-links to web-pages. I am actually really happy about it because even if I study in Amsterdam…
