Event: Now is the Time, Globalisation. How To Resist Through Art

On Tuesday November 11 the third lecture in the series ‘Now is the Time’ was held in Amsterdam. The topic is Globalisation and the effect on art itself. Questions addressed are: Do increased mobility and intercultural exchange lead to a ‘global art vernacular’, a new mainstream in which differences in aesthetic appearance or thematic content have been reduced to a minimum, regardless of the geographical or cultural provenance of a work of art? What about critical countermovements: can art provide an effective platform for these alternative voices? The two key speakers are Julian Stallabrass and Hou Hanru.

(B)Logging: To Anticipate Future Investigations

The current blogs have a lot of remarkable things in common with old traditional logs. With the theory of remediation (Bolter & Grusin, 1999) in mind you could easily state that the old medium of the log has remediated in the new medium weblog (blog).

Event: Now is the Time, Media. Digital Elements In Analogue Artworks.

What is the status of the medium in art production and the discourse in art, in this situation referred to by Rosalind Kraus as the ‘postmedium condition’? How can an artist act critically in this complex cultural field now dominated by multimedia and mass media?

Kaja Silverman and Laura Marks talk about the digital in analogue works of art by Leonardo da Vinci and in Islamic tiles and carpets.

‘Hyves’ and ‘LinkedIn’. My Schizo-life

When people look at my profile on Hyves and LinkedIn they will find only one thing in common: my picture. There is a clear cut line between these two worlds, they are actually existing on two different physical locations on the internet. Are the social platforms a too 2-dimensional representation of my schizo-life?

If I were to conduct a research in this matter I would ask two questions:
1. Who am I presenting anyway?
2. Even if I want to give a complete profile fitting my life, can I?

PICNIC 08 – Paint the World Orange

Marcel Wanders (our very famous dutch designer) has been appointed as chairman of a committee that is going to decide which one of us (all creatives) can promote the dutch identity across the border. If you can make it to a pitch round you will get 10.000 euro and when you win the competition you will get 500.000 euro to realise your proposal.

‘last.fm’, Mainstreaming the Long Tail?

On the blog on Last.FM you can access the Mainstream-O-Meter which is interesting if you consider the long tail (Anderson) theory. It becomes a ‘mainstream’ interest to have an obscure music interest to end up high in the ranking. This is making the long tail more visible but also more questionable.

Book Review: Crossover, Liesbeth Huybrechts (red.)

Crossover, crosses over the boundaries of art and technology within very safe limits.

Even though I understand why the tenure of the catalogue is positive on the influence of new media art on society (because of the broad audience and to promote a relatively obscure art practice), nevertheless I miss some critiques you can have on new media art. This is an informative catalogue without a real debat on the status of new media art within the total art field, which therefore stays on the safe side of promotion rather than discussion.
