Times Square to Art Square is a project to turn all billboards on Times Square into art. At the opening party of Dutchproblogger’s book Sex, Blogs & Rock ‘n’ Roll [English/Dutch] I was fortunate to meet Justus Bruns, one of the guys behind the TS2AS project. When I heard it, I stood there silent for a moment, understanding, but not understanding. How is it possible? Is it possible? Is anything impossible?

Now I understand. The power of New Media will drive this project. Using fans and supporters to tweet, retweet, like and to spread the cause virally, blogs and news sites (DNAinfo, iStockAnalyst, Asylum) are now reporting on his project to get attention, and to get serious. The project is based on a foundation that he has set up, dependant on donations. And now he’s looking for art submissions via Flickr and Vimeo.

The power of Social Media and New Media tools means that the distance between The Netherlands and NY closes. But will his dream be realised? He knows there are hurdles ahead of the team. Times Square is the advertising square of the world. Neon lights and monster billboards. For me, a New Media student, this is kind of revolutionary, I’m behind it and all for it. For the journey, and the curiosity of how New Media can help achieve big things. And, if the project is successful, it will be big.

A call out to my fellow New Media students: join me, Justus & the TS2AS team in Amsterdam on 18th October at a secret location still to be disclosed, to celebrate, support and get inspired.

Follow TS2AS on Facebook / Twitter to find out more information about the location.
