Book Review: Managing Media Work by Mark Deuze

Mark Deuze starts, in the introduction of his book, to argue that most students that follow studies like; journalism, advertising, games, film and television have lack of knowledge on managing their media work and industry. They know, for instance, exactly how to design a new game but ‘they are not empowered to understand how and why the industry works the

Book Review: What Technology Wants by Kevin Kelly

Space: the final frontier – to boldly go where no man has gone before.”

This may be the answer Kelly was looking for when he set out to answer his own question, the title of his book and thesis.  Let’s not get carried away here – I have chosen the above quote in all seriousness.  The infamous Star Trek phrase…

The human race towards immortality or stupidity.

The idea of immortality plays a significant role in the human life. Within every generation, and within every culture this is an issue. The Chinese incorporate this with Ba Xian, the eight immortals. Within he Indian Mythology there is Amrita. Whomever drinks from this potion will be granted with eternal life.  This is also the case with the

The Future of the eBook

Alternative title:  How can the eBook be the future?

Only a few days ago I came across this video, produced by IDEO, narrating this particular organization’s vision on the future of the book. By presenting three different designed interfaces on e-book, each one serving a distinguished purpose, IDEO portrays the…

But today the book is just a commodity. It is still used very often, but for how long? Terry Flew wrote in his

False Predictions of the Future of Social Media

Perhaps it’s my dissatisfaction with social media hypes, and especially the ones that are ignited by marketing guru’s, but I can’t resist the feeling of pseudo science when I read about analyses and predictions about social media on blogs. It’s not that I don’t enjoy reading these posts about the subject that I love, but the neglection of making arguments with scientific foundation is what bothers me. Now I understand that on most popular blogs we are not dealing with new media researchers but I would think that if you are writing about these media a little more profundity would not harm you.

Book review: Repair – Ready to pull the lifeline

Repair is an art and technology festival organized by ARS Electronica, an Austrian platform for digital art and media culture based in Linz. The festival was held this year from September 2 until September 11. The message of Repair is loud and clear. Up until now we homo sapiens have gone out of our way to slowly destroy the…

Bringing the Libre: An Interview with Free Software Developer Jon Phillips

At the recent Libre Graphics Meeting in Brussels, I had the lucky pleasure of meeting Jon Phillips, a man with seemingly as many projects in a given moment as he has fingers and toes. Just a few of his notable involvements include: vector graphics application Inkscape, the Open Clipart Library, the innovative web application stack Aiki Framework, the fully-federated Twitter replacement Status.net (which powers identi.ca), and the projects (palm-top computer, video camera, and portable VJ station) being developed at Qi Hardware. All of these projects are free in the ontological imperative sense.
