The WebGL Globe is an open platform for geographic data visualization in 3D. Here, users can create their own animated 3D globe using data of their choice and share it with others to play and interact with it. The project has been developed by Google’s ‘Data Arts Team’ as a part of Chrome Experiments (“Not your mother’s Javascript”). In this example the world’s population is visualized. Interestingly not they did not use only color to distinguish between population density, but also thousands of ‘data-driven’ 3D spikes to convey the same message. This way the whole visualization becomes more impressive and interesting. Try yourself by clicking on the image and compare it with regular population density maps (Preferably in Chrome).
