After completion of this course the student a) has knowledge of the various possibilities and methods of presenting information visually (through static or interactive graphics), b) is able to critically reflect on various aspects of the graphical presentation of information, and c) is able to comment critically on problems and challenges in the young field of “Information Visualization”.
Among the topics discussed in this course are: the possibilities of interactive information graphics (a collection of examples in this field can be found on http://infosthetics.com and http://visualcomplexity.com ), visual interaction techniques, types of visualizations, cognitive aspects of information visualization, a cultural critique of information visualization, visual literacy, basic concepts concerning the visual presentation of information, manipulation through graphics, uses of graphic space and visual grammar, visualizing the web, (future) application areas of visualization, possible developments, problems and challenges in information visualization.
